Oppos with pegboard experience, I want to ask a question

I want to install a pegboard in my bonus room to hang a bunch of these Husky stackable storage bins.

Kinja'd!!!

There are mounting holes behind the bins designed for pegboards (approx. 2.5" apart).

Kinja'd!!!

Now here’s the thing: I don’t want to deface the wall too much with a subframe made out of 2x2's. It won’t have to support the weight of a bunch of power tools, but it won’t be too lightweight either.

I know that I’ll have to mount the pegboard on the studs, but will I need empty space behind it to accommodate the pegs?

If I wanted to paint the pegboard, what kind of paint should I use?

Thanks for the help.

Use regular wall paint, I guess. Do you ride a motorcycle?

You’ll need space. Paint depends on the pegboard, the PVC coated ones from home depot work well.

How much space? Is a 2x2/2x4 my only option?

About 1" is plenty for most hooks. If you don’t want to jack the wall up too bad make a frame with the pegboard using 1*4s and hang the frame.

Stay out of my garage, thief!

Just mount the top one (line up with a stud on one side) , interlock the others, and shim up whatever remainder at the bottom. They feel pretty durable to me.

I don’t want to interlock them, I want them separate in case I want to take one off. I’m dead set on the pegboard idea.

Also, how awesome are those bins?

They’re good, except if you stack them all up without mounting them anywhere, fill them with screws and nails that were carefully sorted, forget where they are, knock them all over, and spend an hour picking them up and resorting them. Or so I’ve heard from a guy.
